Restaurants & Shopping

Mill Valley Restaurants & Shopping

The downtown shopping area radiates out from all sides of The Depot, the city's Town Square, which houses a bookstore and a café. Several boutiques sell women's clothing: Allie G's, Millina K, Margaret O'Leary, Canvas, Cavallo, Sax Consignment, Red Dot, Wilkes-Bashford, Banana Republic, Chadwick's, Mirasol, Famous For Our Look, and Stefan Maurice. Home furnishings can be found at Pullman & Co., Summer House, Maison Reve, and Greenwood. Smith & Hawken sells plants, flowers, gardening tools, garden furniture, and gift items for the nature lover. The Mill Valley Hat Co. has hats for every taste and occasion. Jewelry (custom and mass-produced) is offered at Alexandria Gallery, Sofia, and Kathleen Dughi. Village Music is a landmark store for music lovers and the place to find rare and popular music recordings (yes, records) and CDs of almost any musical genre and period. Mill Valley Baby Company covers the play, furnishing, and clothing needs of infants and toddlers. There are three shoe stores, one bike shop, a wine shop, and a florist. Water Lilies sells resort and swimwear and you can find cookware at Capricorn and Alessi. The Tamalpais General Store sells cards, gift items, candles, small home furnishings, toys, holiday decorations, soaps, clocks, picture frames, and books. Two Neat focuses on cards and music, with local artists, photographers, and musicians represented in both categories. There is also a day spa, Tea Garden Springs, and two art galleries, along with three coffeehouses for that much-needed latte break.

Want to feel good...

Buy a Ferrari and have lunch at Piatti's, it's right next door!

Buckeye Roadhouse (15 Shoreline Highway, 331-2600) A major hangout for locals. Menu emphasizes upscale American comfort food with specialties oysters bingo, steaks, ribs, salads, and lemon pudding cake. Full bar.

Cascade Grill (44 E. Blithedale, 381-2500) Upscale American comfort food with Italian additions, such as roasted and grilled meats, meatloaf, chicken pot pie, risotto, cioppino, and decadent desserts. Prix fix menu changes daily. Full bar. Dinner only. This used to be called The Avenue Grill and many people still refer to it as "the restaurant where the Avenue used to be".

Piazza d'Angelo (22 Miller, 388-2185) Bustling neighborhood trattoria serving lunch and dinner. Daily specials, pastas, roast chicken, and crème brulee are the winners. Owned by Paolo and Domenico Patrone, who often work the door still.

Piatti (625 Redwood Highway, 380-2525) Creative Italian fare with elegant wood-fired pizzas and a seasonal menu. Upscale atmosphere with bay views and outdoor patio.

El Paseo (17 Throckmorton, 388-0741) Marin's most romantic restaurant. Classic French cuisine and a remarkable wine list that features many rare vintages.

First Crush (24 Sunnyside, 381-7500) Wine bar serving an all California selection by the glass, flights, and bottles. American with French accent small plates. Open late.

Joe's Taco Lounge (382 Miller, 383-8164) Colorful Mexican-food café and hangout for locals. Fish tacos are excellent. Hundreds of hot sauce bottles line the walls. Joe Leis, the old owner, passed away, but his legend lives on.

The Cantina (651 E. Blithedale, 381-1070) Wide selection of Mexican dishes with great appetizer platters and fajitas. Popular with locals and very kid-oriented. I worked there in the early 80's as a bartender. Legendary. Totally legendary.

Robata Sushi Bar & Grill (591 Redwood Highway, 381-8400) Amazing assortment of grilled small plates, as well as excellent sushi and standard Japanese entrees.

Samurai (425 Miller, 381-3680) Japanese cooked foods and sushi. Try the Samurai Special - an enormous dinner for two, attractively presented.

Vasco (106 Throckmorton, 381-3343) Busy local trattoria with wood-fired pizzas, daily fish special, salads, veal entrees, rotisserie meats, and pastas. Dinner only.

2 AM Club (380 Miller, 388-6036) In operation for over 60 years and considered a landmark. A good place for a drink while you play a game of pool or watch sports TV. They shot the cover of the Huey Lewis album "Sports" in this bar. Look for the toilet guitar on the wall, made by Charlie Deal.

What We Call "Whole Paycheck." Great store, bad parking lot!

More Restaurants
India Palace (707 Redwood Highway, 388-3350) Northern Indian dishes. All you can eat lunch buffet for $8. Sean Penn's favorite local lunch place. Best naan bread.
Mama's Royal Café (393 Miller, 388-3261) Funky and eclectic décor celebrates past cultural icons. Huge portions and a wide selection of omelettes. Breakfast and lunch.
Mountain Home Inn (
810 Panoramic Highway, 381-9000) Rustic and casual California cuisine. Marin's highest and most dramatic views of the Bay and hills.
Strawberry Village Shopping
Across Highway 101 to the east, but still in Mill Valley, there is a small shopping center called Strawberry Village This outdoor mall has 60 shops, most of them owner-operated. Many of the shops are service-oriented (five beauty and nail salons, a yoga center, a brokerage firm, two real estate offices, a dry cleaners, a dental office, a travel agency, and two banks). Apparel shops are represented by Pendleton, Patrick James, Giovanni's of , Kidniki, and ArchRival. Evo Spa operates as a day spa providing beauty treatments, massage, and acupunture. There are several café/deli options (Starbucks, Rain Tree, Woody's, and Strawberry Gourmet), a few for fast food (Round Table Pizza, In-N-Out Burgers, and High Tech Burrito), and even a few sit-down dining choices.
